Het idee om de muziek-canon samen te stellen hangt direct samen met het bezig zijn met muzieklijstjes die op muzieklijstjes.nl  worden en zijn verzameld
 


Wat is de muziekcanon (1)

De muziek-canon zijn 1.000 (populaire) cd's die volgens ons en anderen behoren tot de platen die er toe doen. Het ligt natuurlijk voor de hand dat in de muziek-canon platen die langer geleden zijn uitgekomen het vaakst voorkomen. In Nederland komen per jaar zo'n 12 tot 15 duizend cd's op de markt. De meeste platen worden in geringe aantallen verkocht. In muziekbladen wordt slechts een fractie besproken. Oor bespreekt de laatste jaren zo'n 1.800 tot 2.000 cd's. Het klassieke maandblad Luister recenseert naar schatting jaarlijks een duizendtal cd's. De meeste cd's verdwijnen dus in een gat. Aan het eind van het jaar kijken een aantal bladen terug op het voorbije jaar en publiceren een eindlijst ("de beste platen van ..."). Jaren later blijkt vaak dat de platen die tot de besten van een bepaald jaar werden gerekend toch niet zo bijzonder waren. De tijd moet er als het ware over heen gaan om te kunnen bepalen wat echt belangrijk en goed is.

In de muziek-canon zijn 1.000 platen opgenomen die door de jaren heen hun waarde hebben bewezen en opgenomen zijn in de collectie van de Openbare bibliotheek Oss. Het gaat om twee soort platen.

De grootste groep zijn cd's die door muziekkenners in binnen - en buitenland regelmatig worden genoemd. Tweederde van de titels uit de muziek-canon is afkomstig uit de overkoepelende lijst. Een derde deel van de  cd's hoort volgens ons (= Openbare bibliotheek Oss) thuis in de muziek-canon .  Bij deze groep gaat het in wezen om twee soorten platen. Cd's van een bepaalde artiest die een redelijk beeld geven van het werk van de bewuste artiest of groep. Het had ook een andere verzamelaar van deze artiest kunnen zijn maar de opgenomen cd zat nu eenmaal in de collectie van de Openbare bibliotheek Oss (bijvoorbeeld The best of the legendary  Yardbirds uit 1995). De andere platen zijn bewust opgenomen. Van een bepaalde artiest wordt deze studioplaat of verzamelaar in de muziek-canon opgenomen en niet een andere plaat (bijvoorbeeld In search of Amelia Earheart van de groep Plainsong uit 1972 en niet Dark side of the room uit 1992). In de muziek-canon zijn geen klassieke platen opgenomen. Jazz komt mondjesmaat voor. In de  muziek-canon zijn 792 studio-albums, 166 verzamelcd's van één groep of artiest en 42 cd's die door  meerdere artiesten zijn opgenomen.

1.000 cd's zitten in de muziek-canon. Het grootste deel (658 stuks) van die cd's zijn relatief objectief in de muziek-canon terecht gekomen. Het zijn cd's die door muziekkenners regelmatig worden genoemd.  Deze titels werden in twee of meer lijsten genoemd die terugblikken op een bepaalde periode, genre  of muziekstijl. 342 titels zijn suggesties van de Openbare bibliotheek Oss.

Het getal in de laatste kolom geeft aan in hoeveel lijsten de bewuste titel wordt genoemd.

In deze zogenaamde overkoepelende lijst zijn (inmiddels) 19 lijsten opgenomen.

Slechts twee titels worden in 13 lijsten genoemd -> Marvin Gaye's "What's going on" uit 1971 en Prince's Sign o the times uit 1987. Klik hier om door te schakelen naar deze overkoepelende lijst

Top 124

Van de 858 titels die twee keer of meer voorkomen in de overkoepelende lijst zijn er 658 aanwezig in de Openbare bibliotheek Oss. Uit deze 658 titels zijn twee toplijsten samengesteld

 

 

 

De chaos vraagt om keuzes

Dit was de kop boven een artikel van literatuurcriticus Arnold Heumakers in het Cultureel supplement van vrijdag 5 juli 2002 in NRC Handelsblad. De aanleiding voor dit artikel was de in juni 2002 gepresenteerde canon van de belangrijkste Nederlandse literaire werken door de Maatschappij der Nederlandse letterkunde. Dit artikel is opgenomen in de krantenbank. Een krantenarchief van vijf landelijke kranten (Algemeen Dagblad, NRC Handelsblad, Het Parool, Trouw en De Volkskrant).

Uit het artikel van Heumakers het volgende citaat:

Vertaal je dit naar de literatuur, dan zou het betekenen dat elke roman of gedicht in principe even waardevol moet worden gevonden. Dat lijkt logisch, aangezien er geen objectieve criteria bestaan, en het strookt met de mores in de massaculturele speeltuin waar elke vorm van hiërarchie het veld heeft moeten ruimen. Het rare is alleen dat niemand dat ook echt doet, alles even mooi en prachtig vinden. In de praktijk wordt er voortdurend onderscheid gemaakt. Relativisme hoeft dan ook geen mantel der liefde te zijn, die alles bedekt. Integendeel, juist als niets meer vast staat zijn keuzes onvermijdelijk en begint de Kulturkampf.

Binnen de literatuur is de canon daarvoor het aangewezen strijdperk, de plek waar we onze kritische messen kunnen slijpen. Het is een vergissing in de canon een autoriteit te zien, die verbiedt, voorschrijft en bij voorbaat aan banden legt. Dankzij een canon wordt de literatuur zich bewust van zichzelf als literatuur. En van de veranderingen waaraan zij onderhevig is. Dat betekent dat het onverstandig zou zijn de ogen te sluiten voor de wereld waarin de literatuur daadwerkelijk functioneert, voor het literaire bedrijf, voor het reservaat en voor de onwetendheid en desinteresse die het omgeven. De oude meesterwerken zullen in die wereld moeten overleven , de nieuwe komen eruit voort en moeten er hun plek in zien te veroveren.

In NRC Handelsblad van 5 juli worden 15 boeken die na 1982 zijn verschijnen voorgesteld voor de canon. De kop van de diverse artikelen is als volgt:

Lijstjes zijn het laatste middel om de gekte te bezweren, ook in

de literatuur. In een wildgroei van bestsellers en

goedkope herdrukken klinkt steeds vaker de roep om

ordening, hiërarchie, toptienen, en het allerliefst: een canon!

 

Heumakers noch de Openbare bibliotheek ontzegt niemand er zijn eigen smaak 

en oordelen op na te houden. Maar het schaadt niemand ook kennis te nemen

van titels die in een canon worden opgenomen.

 

 

 

Extra impuls

De collectie van de muziekafdeling wordt gefinancierd uit de verhuuropbrengsten. Wekelijks worden 25 tot 30 titels aan de collectie toegevoegd. Elk jaar wordt er in meerdere of mindere mate een extra impuls gegeven aan de collectie. Twee jaar geleden werd bijvoorbeeld de serie Great pianists of the 20th  century aangekocht. In 2002 worden circa 150 titels aangekocht voor de muziek-canon. 

Cd's worden normaal afgenomen van de Nederlandse Bibliotheek Dienst. Deze verzorgt de wekelijkse bestellingen. Tot volle tevredenheid. De cd's voor deze muziek-canon zijn echter aangekocht bij een normale platenzaak: Sounds in Venlo. De beste platenzaak van Nederland! Bijna de hele muziek-canon staat daar gewoon in de bakken opgesteld. En de mensen die er werken weten over wat voor muziek het gaat en komen niet aan met de dooddoener "we kunnen het voor u bestellen" of nog erger "hoe spel je Djivan Gasparyan?"
