GREAT PIANISTS OF THE 20th CENTURY

 

"Great pianists of the 20th century" is de bewust gekozen titel voor het grootste 

cd-project van de laatste jaren.


In oktober 2000 is deze serie opgenomen in de collectie van de Openbare bibliotheek Oss.

De serie heet niet "The great pianists of the 20th century"of "Greatest pianists of the 

20th century" of "The greatest pianists of the 20th century" maar de titel is bewust 

"Great pianists of the 20th century. Proef de verschillen.

Daarmee geeft samensteller Tom Deacon aan dat het een keuze is. Er hadden ook 

andere pianisten in de serie kunnen zitten maar hij volstaat met deze pianisten. 

Het merendeel van de voorspelbare kritiek richt zich daar dan ook op. Maar elke keus 

is dubieus en elke criticus wil in zijn stukje aangeven dat hij niet van de straat is door 

andere namen te noemen.

"Great pianists of the 20th century" is het laatste grote project dat Philips heeft volbracht 

toen het nog deel uitmaakte van de Philips-"familie".

In 1998 en 1999 werden honderd dubbelcd's uitgebracht. Op elke cd staat het werk 

van een pianist centraal die in de 20e eeuw actief was. In totaal komen 72 pianisten aan 

bod. De echt grote pianisten krijgen 2 of 3 cd's.

De 100 dubbelcd's bevatten ruim 250 uur pianomuziek (100 dagen van 2.5 uur!).

De complete serie zet in een klap de bekendste pianowerken uit de klassieke muziek 

neer. Er zitten in de serie veel overlappingen Dat is bewust gedaan. Het is mogelijk om 

van sommige werken 3 tot 7 verschillende uitvoeringen te beluisteren.

Philips heeft om deze serie te kunnen uitbrengen samengewerkt met andere

 (grote) platenmaatschappijen. Pianisten die voor bijvoorbeeld EMI of Sony

 (Columbia) opnamen maakten zijn daarom in deze serie toch aanwezig. De serie is van

 1 t/m 100 genummerd. De eerste cd is van Géza Anda en de 100e is van Krystian

  Zimerman (keurig alfabetisch op achternaam).

In 1998 en 1999 werd in de diverse klassieke muziektijdschriften uitvoerig stilgestaan bij 

de diverse "worpen". Elke maand kwamen er 10 nieuwe titels uit. De ontvangst was over 

het algemeen zeer lovend alhoewel bijna elke (Nederlandse) recensent het niet kon laten 

om op te merken dat die of die pianist toch ook opgenomen had moeten worden in de 

serie. Zo is er altijd wel iets.

In oktober 1998 kwam de Canadese samensteller Tom Deacon in Gramophone aan 

het woord.

"But in the end I believe we have created a series of recordings which will give a 

faithful picture of piano-playing in the twentieth century as practised by some of the 

greatest musicians".

"Many people have enquired about pianists whose names do not figure in this edition. 

My only answer is that the list is not complete and was never intended to be so. We 

do, however, have every intention of continuing the Great Pianists edition with a 

second series".

 


 


Special Achievement award

In het vooraanstaande Gramophone werd de serie op waarde geschat.

In het november nummer van 1999 werd de serie met de "Special Achievement award" beloond.

Editor James Jolly zei er het volgende over:

"While critcics may quibble over the choice of this or that pianist, or debate the wisdom of particular repertoire 

choices, what has been striking is the sheer level of agreement there has been with the final choices, all of which 

are enhanced by first-class production values. It's a courageous and impressive achievement and fully deserving of

 the Special Achievement Award".

 

 


Labour of love

Classic cd kon daar niet bij achter blijven. Critici van dit blad kwamen met de Critic's award.

In het aprilnummer van 1999 werd over de serie het volgende gezegd.

So comprehensive is Philips' edition(.) that very few would dare to claim that many important names had been left 

out. Any criticism, then? Well, maybe the edition is loaded towards the historical side.

Tom Deacon can be proud of succesfully master-minding what is a recording milestone. Corporate it may be, but 

this collection has "labour of love" written all over it, and has benefited enormously from having , not a committee, but 

a single judicious pair of ears as its final arbiter.
