Dylan Jones - iPod, therefore I am

In de zomer van 2005 verscheen iPod, therefor I am van de Engelse journalist Dylan Jones (GQ, Sunday times, Observer, Arena, the Face). Dylan Jones is een fervent platenkoper (sinds 1972). Sinds enige tijd is hij verslaafd aan zijn iPod. Niet om, zoals zovelen, illegaal cs's te downloaden. Hij koestert nog steeds zijn atomen! Nee, de iPod als aanleiding om grondig in de eigen platencollectie te gaan grasduinen. Her en der nummers naar de iPod over te hevelen. Al doende een eigen canon samenstellen. Hij doet in het 342 pagina's tellende boek in 19 hoofdstukken op een innemende manier verslag van de iPod en zijn ervaringen met het selecteren van nummers die overgezet moesten worden naar de draagbare jukebox.

Persoonlijke reis door de muziek

De Britse journalist Dylan Jones is zo'n typische platenkoper, en toch is hij gevallen voor de iPod. Zo kan hij eindelijk eens goed luisteren naar zijn tienduizenden platen.

De Britse tijdschriftenman Dylan Jones (1961) - hij werkte onder meer bij i-D, The Face en Arena en is thans hoofdredacteur van GQ - koopt al dertig jaar muziek. Eerst singletjes, later lp's en nu vooral cd's. Niet een beetje maar heel veel. Hij is zo iemand die Britse marketing deskundigen een 'fifty quid bloke' noemen: niet meer heel jonge muziekfanaten die met een zekere regelmaat met vijftig pond op zak een cd-zaak binnenlopen en zich te goed doen aan de nieuwste releases. Een nieuwe Coldplay, een heruitgave met bonustracks van Iggy Pop en een verzamelaar met nieuwe dance, aangevuld met een schappelijk geprijsde Blue note-reissue. Zo eclectisch is het mandje van Dylan Jobes in de megastore, en het zijn mensen als Jones van wie de detailhandel het voor een groot deel moet hebben.

Het zijn ook mensen als Jones, die zich op de eerste bladzijde van iPod therefore I am, a personal journey through music al een muziek verslaafde noemt, van wie de platenindustrie verwacht dat ze zo trouw aan de geluidsdrager blijven dat ze iTunes, downloaden en het gebruik van een mp3-spelers het langst zullen uitstellen.

Dat deze trouwe muziekconsument ineens met een dik boek op de proppen komt waarin hij uiterst verleidelijk propaganda voert voor de in zijn ogen belangrijkste uitvinding sinds gesneden brood: de iPod, lijkt op de bekering van de laatste ongelovige. Maar het aardige is dat het Jones er niet om gaat iedereen de platenzaak uit en het internet op te jagen, maar dat hij zijn mp3-speler vooral ziet als middel om die tienduizenden in de loop der decennia verzamelde platen en cd's eindelijk eens goed tebeluisteren.

Heel aanstekelijk schrijft hij over de uren die hij voor zijn platenkasten heeft gezeten, zijn collectie doornemend op muziek die hij nog wel eens zou willen horen. Uiteindelijk bevat de bibliotheek in zijn Mac 4.399 nummers, uiteenlopend van jazz en dance tot punk en rock 'n' roll. Geestig is de weerslag van zijn afwegingsproces: hoeveel liedjes van denieuwe U2 zijn echt de moeite waard? En Lou Reed na 1973? Nee, laat maar. Zo worden alle aankopen uit zijn leven als muziekconsument onder de loepgenomen.

Nu zal het u en mij een zorg zijn wat de heer Jones mooie muziek vindt,maar het knappe is dat de auteur, hoewel beslist een muzikale omnivoor, precies de juiste smaakbalans heeft tussen eigenzinnigheid en voorkeur voor de canon. Zo leest zijn 'persoonlijke reis door muziek' als het verslag van dertig jaar popgeschiedenis. Van hitparade-singles via punk (the Clash), new wave (Joy division), reggae, hiphop, en house liefhebbert Jones door naar jazz. Uitvoerig legt hij uit hoe hij met die muziek in aanraking kwam, wat ze voor hem betekende, en wat de waarde ervan voor hem nu is. En dat is beslist een lezenswaardig relaas. Minder interessant zijn de hoofdstukken gewijd aan de maker van de iPod, Apple, en ook word je soms kriegel van al te veel koketterie.

Jones is een trendy bladenman en heeft menig sleutelfiguur uit de mode, film en pop de hand mogen schudden, maar zijn boek had van die ontmoetingen verschoond mogen blijven. De meerwaarde zit hem in de uitvoerige lijsten met favoriete muziek. De beste dansnummers, de mooiste soulnummers, de honderd beste jazzplaten, het beste uit de immense Van Morrison-catalogus: Jones zet ze op een rijtje.

Zijn eigenwijsheid en bereidheid af te wijken van de canon is meestal aangenaam en terecht. Zo mag best eens geroepen worden dat Van Morrisons Astral weeks (1968) natuurlijk een meesterwerk is, maar dat diens Veedon fleece (1974) het beste is dat hij ooit opnam. Een enkele keer giert hij uit de bocht. Zo diskwalificeert hij zich volledig wanneer hij Lou Reeds meesterwerk New York (1989) 'not one of the worst records of his career, one of the worst records of anyone's career' noemt. Maar voor bijvoorbeeld beginnende jazz-liefhebbers of slechts zijdelings in dance geïnteresseerden bevat zijn boek een goudmijn aan tips.
