Jan Vollaard - El Pea
de magie van de labelcompilatie (2024)


Hij is het proefmonster van de muziekindustrie. Vaak ligt ie voor een prikkie bij de tweedehands. Precies daar duikt muziekjournalist Jan Vollaard (ex-OOR, NRC) zijn parels op en vond hij de inspiratie voor dit boek.

‘Labelcompilaties laten je afdalen in de kelder van de pophistorie, om boven te komen met het geluid van de toekomst’, aldus Vollaards inleidende woorden, en het zou het motto van El Pea kunnen zijn. De titel, weten we dan, komt van de gelijknamige dubbel-lp waarmee Island in 1971 zijn artiestenstal bij een breed publiek onder de aandacht probeerde te brengen. De jonge Jan viste de in een hoes met een kolossale groene erwt gestoken dubbelaar voor een tientje (guldens) uit de bakken, waarna er een wereld voor hem open ging.

Sleutelnummer: One Of These Things First van Nick Drake. Van Island-toppers Traffic, Free, Jethro Tull en ELP naar de romantiek van Nick Drake en Sandy Denny – een levenslange verslaving was geboren. En dát, lezen we ook in het voorwoord van Jeroen Woe, is precies het idee achter de klassieke labelcompilatie en ook dit boek. Schatgraven. Steeds verder, steeds dieper. In alle hoeken en gaten.


In een zeventigtal hoofdstukken zap je door de muziekhistorie, langs legendarische (compilaties van) labels, groot en klein, en hun verhaal – met veel kennis en humor opgediend. Aan opsommen doet Vollaard niet, dit is zijn korte vertellingen van de meester. Met anekdote en uitroepteken. Een mozaïek van de popgeschiedenis, met vele voetnoten en terzijdes en prachtig artwork.

Zo ontmaskert Vollaard Banksy (?) aan de hand van de stencil art-hoes van Delicious Vinyl (1989) en vormen ook de andere groot afgedrukte hoesontwerpen samen een kunstcollectie op zich. El Pea prikkelt en maakt nieuwsgierig naar ongehoorde muziek, en het mooie is (zie sticker): die hoeft niet duur te zijn! Al Pea – met enkele bijdragen van jonge, achter de toonbank gerekruteerde gastschrijvers – is de perfecte gids in de knakendisco van de circulaire economie. Nog goed bezig ook.
