Mojo's ultimate jukebox :
the 100 singles you must own (april 2003)

Bij het aprilnummer van Mojo zat een klein boekje waaraan ruim dertig van "the world's most respected music experts" bijdroegen. Onder de deelnemers bevonden zich o.a. Nick Hornby ("High fidelity"), Nick Tosches, Charlie Gillett en Jon Savage. Ieder mocht een tiental singletjes selecteren voor opname in de jukebox. Drie criteria: verschenen op 7-inch vinyl, de B-kant moest liefst ook een behoorlijk nummer zijn en de bewuste track moet momenteel verkrijgbaar zijn op cd. Niet geheel toevallig verschijnt dit boekje op het moment dat het boek "Songbook"van Nick Hornby is verschenen waarin hij uitvoerig stilstaat bij een groot aantal favoriete musici en nummers. |

In de rubriek "Hoor eens" in HP/De tijd van 11 april 2003 zegt Thomas Verbogt het volgende over the ultimate jukebox van Mojo: "Bij het Britse muziektijdschrift Mojo zit deze maand een boekje met de titel Ultimate jukebox. Daarin staan de honderd singles die je per se moet hebben. Misschien niet de honderd béste singles, maar wel de honderd die in die ultieme jukebox thuishoren. Een van de samenstellers van deze verzameling is de schrijver Nick Hornby. Ik houd erg van dit soort lijsten. Je gaat er een tijdje over zitten nadenken. De ultieme jukebox. Dat is andere koek dan de vraag welke plaat je mee zou nemen naar een onbewoond eiland. Ik heb helaas geen singles meer, maar veel van de nummers die in deze lijst staan, heb ik wel ergens op cd. Daar ga ik uiteraard onmiddellijk naar kijken: wat heb ik en wat niet? En ook is er natuurlijk de vraag: kén ik wel alle nummers? Ik zeg het maar meteen: nee, niet alle. Ik noem bijvoorbeeld The Contours met First I look at the purse. Dat nummer is uit 1965 en ik heb er nog nooit van gehoord. Wél van een ander nummer uit hetzelfde jaar. En het verbaast me enorm dat het op deze lijst staat, ja, zelfs op de negentiende plaats, het verschrikkelijke Wooly bully van Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs. Ik vond het nummer toen al écht niet kunnen. En nog steeds niet (...) Verder constateert Verbogt dat Friday on my mind van de Easybeats niet is opgenomen in de jukebox. A bloody shame! Hij eindigt zijn column als volgt: In de Ultimate jukebox zit veel te veel niet. Heerlijk. Ik ben met mijn eigen jukebox bezig. |
